Kim Skala - Member Spotlight September

Q: Tell us about your business and how long in business:

A: The Skala Insurance Agency was founded in 1969 by my father John Skala. It was a brand new scratch, start-up agency and has grown to over 3000 households in the last 49 years. Next year we will be celebrating our 50th year in business! Our family owned and operated Heritage Insurance Agency takes pride in putting members first. Our goal is to educate our members to help them customize their own coverages to meet their individual needs. Because of this approach, The Skala Insurance Agency has a trusted reputation as being "On Your Side" when you need it the most.

Q: What inspired you to start your own business?
A: When I graduated from College (Kent State University - Bachelor of Finance), I told my Dad, "I do NOT want to sell insurance! I don't think I'd be very good at it....." So, I went to work for the main company Nationwide Insurance, as an Underwriter. Then, I changed jobs within Nationwide Insurance and worked in Technical Support. After 6 years with the Company, I was offered a Management position. At that very same time, my Dad was looking for a new Sales Agent. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse (less pay, longer hours) - an opportunity to work in the Family Business with the option to someday take it over. Who could turn that offer down?!? On 1/1/2014, my Dad officially retired and I purchased the Agency.

Q: Share an interesting or little known fact about you or your company:
A: 75% of our new clients are Referrals - we are an Agency of 'old school' ways of doing things. We still answer our telephones with a live person! We have a large client base that still pay their premiums in person at our two locations (Bainbridge Twp/Chagrin Falls AND Mantua) with CASH 😊. We have a large Farm Insurance client base.

Q: What is one piece of advice/words of business wisdom you would share with our members:
A: There's always more than one way to solve a particular challenge! Be innovative, creative, and think outside of the box!

Q: How long have you been involved with NAWBO?
A: Since February 2018

Q: What do you enjoy most or find most valuable about being a NAWBO member?
A: Being a NAWBO member has helped build my confidence, has brought me so many new friends and people to reference for my different business needs, and has become the first place I look to when I need assistance with something in my business &/or personal life! I love NAWBO Cleveland! Thanks for being such an AWESOME organization!

Q: What is one little known fact about you that others might find fun or interesting?

A: I have lost 35 pounds since 11/1/2017!!! So proud of this part of my personal life achievements! Also, I have 1 Retriever/Lab Doggie and 4 Kitty Cats.
